Series & Progressions - Blue Hill Art & Cultural Center, 510 Memorial Drive, Pearl River NY

Blue Hill Art & Cultural Center presents its 64th open juried exhibition entitled, Series & Progressions. The exhibition focuses on a sequence of works which highlights artist’s influences and direction. This exhibition features works of twelve artists. They were selected from a very large pool of applicants. The selections comprise a series of individual exhibitions.

The large-scale impressive works by Norman Galinsky are meticulously created. His uses balanced proportions, circular forms with a central focus point, present a still point, which encourages an introspection and a quiet awe. A similar use of patterns and strong dynamic compositions in highly intense color photography by Miroslav Vrzala echo a feeling of geometric majesty and utilize energy patterns that often find their way into his images.

The structures of these works are balanced by the freedom found in the sheer flow of shapes in the paintings by Bari Goodman. Similarly, the lyrical compositions by Ray Lagstein are not methodical but instead, insightfully improvised with compositional variations.

Contrary to the method of creation, the wooden carved sculptures by Carl Rattner are carefully planned and carved but give a sense of freedom in the way the shapes form and descend over the stands that hold them.

A series of luxurious paintings of singular fruit integrated with contrasting patterns, by Eleanor Grace Miller are a welcome contrast against the long-extended brick wall of the concourse.  Likewise, José Luis Peláez’s, expressive geometric colorful dog portraits are whimsical, fresh and add a welcome humor and richness to the show.

Experience the journey of an artist who traveled and captured the raw beauty of the northern seas and glaciers by Eleanor Goldstein. The large images are the result of three trips to the Artic Circle to study and paint the melting ice, with a progression of light to dark and a depiction of the silence of the Artic.

Emily Barnett’s expertise is apparent in her large etchings of views of familiar universal paths, backyards and gardens. She uses diverse lines with airy, playful textures and a sense of movement.

Carol Greiff Lagstein’s large paintings of dancer’s holding balanced poses with strong colorful backgrounds are dynamic and create a vibrancy in the lobby.

Harriet Sobie Goldstein integrates manmade plastics into her works to create colorful collages. In a creative way, she is reusing these discarded materials inclusive of wires, nets, meshes to make colorful pattern filled paintings and the importance of imaginative use for abandoned things.

Trine Giaver’s paintings are a vibrant series of paintings which are full of life, whether is it a kitchen table with a pair of sneakers next to a vase of flowers, a desolate café, or vibrant café outdoors, she captures moments with the flair of painterly humanity.

Please join us for an opening reception, Saturday September 13th from 3:00pm – 5:00pm.
